Create a functional, low-maintenance garden suitable for a site with poor soil conditions, incorporating a durable lawn for year-round family use, welcoming entertaining areas and an efficient irrigation system.
To address the challenges of the site based on an old disused quarry, stone walls are incorporated to define the different areas within the garden and to create level changes. Limestone paving is used throughout for a clean look and ease of maintenance and artificial grass is installed to provide a durable and practical lawn for family use throughout the year. A spacious oak shelter is introduced at the heart of the garden, featuring a stunning stone fireplace with built-in outdoor woodburner and a Grillo bar area. The shelter accommodates a generous seating space in front of the fire for relaxing, and a bar area for socialising.
The planting design balances year-round interest with low-maintenance requirements. Given the garden's tendency to dry out in summer, all planting areas are enriched with well-rotted compost and equipped with an irrigation system. The selection of plants ensures seasonal variation while thriving in the site's conditions.
The existing Koi pond was remodelled, relined and enhanced with a new waterfall feature before being restocked with the client’s fish. New steps are installed to improve access between levels and modern slatted fencing was introduced along one boundary to provide a fresh, contemporary finish. A bespoke lighting system was integrated throughout the shelter and garden, adding depth and ambiance to the outdoor space. Overall, the design creates a versatile environment, perfectly suited for large social gatherings while still maintaining a robust and practical play space for children.
