Site Specifics
We were invited to redesign a mature shaded garden in which the client struggled to grow anything. Because of these difficulties, there was little or no interest in the garden, and the space was underused. The main feature of the garden design ahead of our work was the overgrown, mossy lawn, which was not in line with our client’s desires.
Client Brief
Our client desired an interesting and attractive garden that would be ideal for socialising. To create more interest, they requested a range of plant species that would thrive in the shady conditions of the landscape and remain a focal point throughout the year.
Design Solution
To manage the challenging terrain of this garden and the mature birch tree’s sensitive root system, the garden design is divided into two controlled levels using stone walls. These stone walls create structure and flow to the garden design, separating the landscape into two separate zones, including the main feature seating area. This is located at the bottom of the garden and accessed by a bespoke Banded Limestone and block paving pathway. For shelter and privacy, a 1.2m high wraparound wall has been installed around this area.
The border of the garden is fitted with dwarf walls to complement the property and create a cohesive sense of flow throughout the garden design, as well as match the stone detailing of the pathways.
A great feature of this landscape is the existing birch tree, and we emphasised this with a generous tree ring. A raised sleeper bed filled with shade-loving plants such as white perennial foxgloves, evergreen topiary balls, and drifts of ferns separates the main patio area from the rest of the garden, keeping it organised.
Slatted fencing has been installed down the right side boundary for privacy, but it offers a modern feel and greater coverage. This is the shortest boundary of the garden, and the unique layering of the fence panels makes it appear larger, so the space is more comfortable overall.
To ensure this garden can be used at all hours of the day, discreet LED lighting has been installed alongside the stone wall at the rear of the garden to illuminate the main seating area and patio space.
4th Dimension
The client was really pleased with the finished garden design and has since commissioned us to install a large 6m x 3m chunky shelter as an addition to the rear garden. They were so pleased with our work that shortly after the completion of this garden design, they instructed us to remodel the front garden and driveway.
Their back garden remains a stunning landscape that is low-maintenance and modern, offering plenty of space for relaxation and entertaining as they desired. The shade-loving plants continue to thrive despite the limiting conditions of the garden, and the hard landscaped areas withstand the test of time.
