Site Specifics
This large garden design was situated on a disused sandstone quarry. As a result, the topsoil levels were very thin, and the garden was extremely dry. Numerous veteran trees monopolised all the soil moisture, and planting generally struggled. The garden had previously been landscaped, but the client was not happy with the design or the amount of usable garden.
Client Brief
Our client requested a garden design that created an interesting yet low-maintenance landscape with year-round interest, providing ample space for large parties and social gatherings. However, they also wanted to ensure they could make use of the lawn year-round for sporting activities and children’s play.
Design Solution
By creating a focal point in the garden for the family and friends to socialise in, we used a large fireplace and a traditional oak-built shelter. This provided cover for a bar, an entertaining space, and a fireplace. We altered the space for the patio areas to be more in keeping with large gatherings, and we used local sandstone walls to allow us to control the levels to improve soil depth, drainage and functionality.
All lawn area was laid to artificial grass and an extensive volume of well-rotted manure was incorporated into all planting areas, improving water retention, soil depth and slow-release nutrients for all planting. Plants were carefully selected as some parts of the garden were in constant shade while others were in full sun.
Some areas were very damp, others prone to drought. It was important that the planting be successional and there always be something in flower in order to create as much interest as possible. A full lighting scheme was installed, all synced to the client’s phone for ease of operation. All beds were fed with a state-of-the-art irrigation system, again controlled via an app. LED strip lighting was recessed under wall copings and steps for additional appeal at all hours of the day.
4th Dimension
During the construction of the rear, the client was so impressed with the work that they instructed us to reconfigure the front garden
