Site Specifics
This garden design project took place at a new build property in the rural town of Rainford. The existing garden was essentially a blank canvas, as our client had been left with a concrete flag path and a patch of bare earth when they moved in.
Assessing the landscape, we discovered that the soil was heavy clay and container builders’ rubble.
Client Brief
Our client desired to have a low-maintenance garden that would still be suitable for socialising. While our client enjoys spending time outdoors with their friends and family, they do not have time for garden maintenance and wanted a garden that would be easy to look after throughout the year.
Design Solution
To align with our client’s desires for a social yet low-maintenance garden, we centred the garden design around a main focal point of a timber shelter. This 3m x 3m chunky shelter creates a covered seating area for social occasions and allows the garden to be used in all weather conditions.
This was a modest outdoor space, which was made to feel bigger by painting all the boundary fences black. This not only gives the impression of a wider space, through the contrast of dark colours with the soft landscaping elements, but also creates a contemporary appearance to the garden to complement the new build property.
Additional seating is provided through a low stone wall, which divides the garden into separate zones and provides textural appeal. To complement this construction, limestone paving has been used throughout the garden and as the main patio area. A block paving strip in charcoal was installed along the pathway for contrast and to complement the black fencing.
All planters are raised to allow for easy maintenance, as well as drawing the eyes upwards to give the illusion of a wider garden. Our team also curated and installed mixing planting displays, which offer year-round structure and appeal through 3 clipped lollipop trees.
Our client opted for artificial grass as the main lawn area because of its low-maintenance needs.
4th Dimension
This was a successful project for the team, and our client was very pleased with the finished revamp of their garden. Due to the success of this low-maintenance garden, 4D Garden Design were recommissioned by the client to renovate their front garden.
Her feedback two years on: “The garden is amazing, I can’t believe it’s been nearly 2 years since it was done as it looks like it has only been completed recently.”
