Site Specifics
This garden design in Heaton focused on a sloped back garden which needed a complete redesign to improve drainage, add new interest and capitalise on the amazing views. The landscape was in poor shape as the mature trees had zapped the soil of any moisture and nutrient content. However, due to a Tree Preservation Order, these could not be removed.
A key feature of this garden design project was the fantastic view at the rear of the garden overlooking a local wildlife lodge and the sprawling landscape of Winter Hill and Rivington Pike which needed to be maintained. Brick and concrete from the old garden were earmarked to be recycled as hardcore during the build process.
Client Brief
Our client expressed how important it was to retain the existing trees in the landscape due to the preservation order in place. They also expressed a desire to have more planting and interest in their garden without blocking out the incredible views at the rear of the landscape.
Design Solution
This garden design was loosely based on the idea of an amphitheatre, with the view of Winter Hill and Rivington Pike as the main focal point. The circular lawn was domed to improve drainage as the garden had a slope to it, while also serving an aesthetic purpose.
To provide access throughout the garden and highlight the unique circular design, we installed wide steps leading down from the house into the main entertaining area.
Two smaller circular paved areas were created by our team and specifically designed to be flexible in their use. These paved areas could be used as sitting areas or for displaying an existing sculpture. The main patio was retained with brick walls that were matched with the client’s existing house bricks for a cohesive look.
All boundary fences were replaced throughout the garden. The side fences were constructed using large chunky posts, oak oiled with bespoke tongue and groove panels hung in between. This gives the new fencing a high-quality appearance and provides rhythm down each side of the garden.
A new low picket fence and gate were installed along the rear boundary and painted black to make the garden feel bigger. The low design was specifically chosen to prevent blocking the view from the house, as requested by our client.
4th Dimension
The client has since invited us back to continue further works in the garden, including installing a wildlife pond, felling a diseased tree and installing a paved area for a Wendy house for their granddaughter. We have also completed a porch construction to the front of the house.
