Case Study: Timber Shelters

How wonderful is it to have had a bit of sunshine lately after so many months of rain?! We have had an increase in phone calls this month from clients ready to transform their garden for the summer, and one of our most desired elements is the garden shelter. I wanted to explore this in more detail and take you through a short case study of a project we worked on last year…

Project Objectives: Create a functional, low-maintenance garden incorporating welcoming entertaining areas.

The Quarry Garden Project was designed to create a practical and low-maintenance outdoor space. With poor soil conditions and the need for durability, the project required careful planning. At its core is a timber shelter that provides a useful and inviting space for social gatherings and relaxation, and offers both shade and warmth. Built from oak, it is strong, long-lasting and perfect for an outdoor setting. The open structure allows for clear views of the garden and makes the space feel connected to its surroundings, while providing a reliable place to gather in different seasons. Its design allows for comfortable seating, with enough space for both relaxation and social events.

Key Features

A stone fireplace with a built-in outdoor woodburner adds warmth and extends the use of the space into colder months. The fire creates a welcoming focal point where people can sit and enjoy the garden and an outdoor TV is built into the stone wall above the fireplace. A Grillo bar and kitchen area encourages entertaining, providing space for preparing and serving food and drinks, and making it useful for both small family meals and larger events. With both the fireplace and bar, the shelter becomes more than just a seating area—it is a place designed for spending time outdoors in comfort.

Supporting Elements

Limestone paving is used throughout the garden, creating a uniform and easy-to-maintain surface. This helps tie the shelter into the rest of the design. A modern slatted fence along one boundary adds privacy while keeping the look simple. The straight lines of the fencing contrast with the natural texture of the oak, creating balance. A built-in lighting system enhances the shelter and garden and enables a smooth transition from afternoon to evening use. The lighting highlights key features and provides a practical way to navigate the space at night.

This project has turned a disused site into a functional and attractive outdoor space. The timber shelter plays a central role in this transformation, providing a space that is both practical and inviting. More than just a structure, it improves the way the garden is used and enjoyed, making it a valuable part of the overall design.

So, why include a garden shelter?

The shelter is a key part of making the garden usable year-round. It provides several benefits:

· Extended Outdoor Use – The shelter offers protection from sun and rain, making the garden functional in different weather conditions.

· Added Property Value – A well-designed outdoor structure can increase the appeal and usability of a property.

· Low Maintenance – Oak is a durable material that requires little upkeep compared to other woods.

· Flexible Use – Whether for family gatherings, social events, or quiet time, the shelter serves multiple purposes.

We can install a variety of different sizes and styles of shelter to suit your individual space.
